This Privacy Policy ("Policy") (and any terms of use or any other documents referred to in it) explain how Independent International Legal Advocates ("IILA") will process any personal information that we collect from you, or that you give to us. For the purpose of applicable data protection legislation (including but not limited to the Data Protection Act 1998 and the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679)) (the "Data Protection Legislation"), the data controller is Independent International Legal Advocates, 447 Broadway, 2nd Floor, New York NY, 10013, USA.

INFORMATION WE MAY COLLECT FROM YOU

Like all website owners, IILA receives and records non-personally identifiable information from your browser in the Website server logs. Whenever you request a page through your browser, the navigation and clickstream data, such as IP address, browser, operating system, date and time are stored in a log file. This non-personally identifiable information cannot be used to identify specific individuals.

IILA may collect and process the following personal information about you:

Information you provide directly to IILA. You may provide IILA information about you by providing your name and email address to us or by subscribing to receive IILA’s news or by corresponding with us by phone, e-mail or otherwise, or entering into a contractual relationship with IILA. This includes information you provide when you register as a volunteer, apply for a position, subscribe to a newsletter, request our support services, donate to IILA and when you report a problem with our site. The information you give us may include your name, address, e-mail address, phone number, personal description and photograph. This information can also include a CV, and other information when seeking a position in pro bono or volunteer support.

Information we collect about you: With regard to each of your visits to our site we may automatically collect the following information: technical information, including the Internet protocol (IP) address used to connect your computer to the Internet, your login information, browser type and version, time zone setting, browser plug-in types and versions, operating system and platform; information about your visit, including the full Uniform Resource Locators (URL) clickstream to, through and from our site (including date and time); page response times, download errors, length of visits to certain pages, page interaction information (such as scrolling, clicks, and mouse-overs), and methods used to browse away from the page and any phone number used to call our phone number.

Information we receive from other sources: We may receive information about you if you use services we provide. For example, donations are made via online payment platforms from which IILA collects certain personal information (e.g. name, organization, address (land and email), whether US tax payer, donation amount). We may also collect information that you post on our Twitter or LinkedIn accounts. We are also working closely with third parties (including, for example, business partners, law firms, search information providers, fundraising websites) and may receive information about you from them.

COOKIES

Our site may place cookies on your computer if you agree. A cookie is a small file of letters and numbers. These cookies record demographic information (which is not personal data). Whenever you request a page through your browser, the navigation and clickstream data, such as IP address, browser, operating system, date and time are stored in a log file. To the extent that any demographic information is combined with personal data, we will treat this combined set of information as personal data.

These cookies allow us to distinguish you from other users of our website, which helps us to provide you with a good experience when you browse our website and also allows us to improve our site. They allow us to recognize and count the number of visitors and to see how visitors move around the site when they are using it. This helps us to improve the way our website works, for example by ensuring that users are finding what they are looking for easily.

USES OF YOUR INFORMATION

We use information held about you in the following ways:

  • To manage your involvement in our work and to carry out any contractual obligations entered into between IILA and you [as our use of your information will be necessary for our legitimate interests or to perform any such contract that you have with us);

  • To administer, manage and keep our website safe and secure, with any and all use of your information for these purposes necessary for our legitimate interests;

  • We may combine the above information with information received from other sources for the same purposes;

  • To provide you with information when you have opted in, as set out below;

  • For the processing of any donations received by any means, including the processing of your information by a third party processor.

Third-party data processors are obligated to provide adequate protection in line with this Policy over the personal data they process on our behalf.

PROVIDING YOU WITH INFORMATION

We may use the information that you give us through the website or in person to contact you by electronic means to provide updates on the following areas, if IILA has obtained your opt-in consent:

  • IILA’s work;

  • Specific IILA projects;

  • IILA’s fundraising initiatives and how you may wish to contribute.

We may also permit selected third parties to contact you by electronic means for the same purposes as set out above if we have obtained your opt-in consent.

DISCLOSURE OF YOUR INFORMATION

IILA will only disclose your information to selected third parties in the following limited circumstances:

  • For the performance of any contractual relationship;

  • For the purposes set out in this policy;

  • For the improvement of this website;

  • When required to do so by law;

  • To protect the confidentiality or security of IILA’s information.

IILA will not sell, trade or otherwise exploit your personal data.

STORING YOUR DATA

All information you provide to us is stored on IILA’s secure servers. Once we have received your information, we will use strict procedures and security features to try to prevent unauthorized access. IILA will do its utmost to protect your data, subject to the inherent security risks associated with the Internet.

The personal information that we collect from you may be transferred to, and stored at, a destination outside the European Economic Area ("EEA"). It may also be processed by staff operating outside the EEA who work for us or for one of our clients or partners. This may be regarding such matters as work projects or processing donations. IILA provides adequate safeguards in line with this Policy and the GDPR to protect your data wherever it is processed. Furthermore, we only allow third parties to process your personal data on our behalf that are located in the EEA or a jurisdiction with an adequacy finding from the European Commission. IILA uses standard contract clauses approved by the European Commission and adopt other means under European Union law to ensure protection of your data.

RETAINING YOUR DATA

IILA will hold your information for as long as is necessary to comply with our statutory and contractual obligations and in accordance with our legitimate interests as a data controller.

YOUR RIGHTS

As an organization focused on the upholding of individual rights, IILA is committed to ensuring your rights under the GDPR and other data protection laws are upheld. These rights include access to, review of and altering mistakes to any of your personal data; clarity about how your personal data may be processed; limiting or ceasing processing of your data by IILA; erasing all personal data IILA may hold.

JOBS/VOLUNTEER/INTERNSHIP APPLICATIONS

Any personal data you submit when applying for jobs or internships at ID will be used solely for recruitment purposes (including for identifying job applicants, evaluating applications, making hiring and employment decisions, processing internship applications, and contacting you by phone or in writing). We will keep this data no longer than is necessary for these processes to be completed unless required by law to do otherwise. Thereafter, it will be securely erased.

CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

Any changes to the Policy will be updated to the website and posted here. Please check back regularly to see any updates or changes to this Policy. IILA may in addition email you to tell you about any such changes.
