Examples of iila activities since 2018
To give a number of examples out of the wide range of topics and issues and States and regional groupings that IILA has supported, the following present such:
Worked with a Pacific Island State on strategic planning for a potential regional human rights instrument;
IILA commenced its involvement on the treaty negotiations for the “BBNJ” treaty to conserve and sustainably use marine biological diversity in the “high seas” from its inception, working first with individual States (including Ghana, Colombia and Honduras), and then supporting the rotating State Chairs of the G77 & China from 2018 onwards;
Supported a Central American State through ICC negotiations, including on the activation of the crime of aggression under the Rome Statute;
Acted as general legal advisor, strategic negotiating support and capacity builder for Chairs of the G77 & China – from Palestine to Pakistan to Cuba to Uganda;
Supported several developing States in the plastics treaty negotiations;
Worked with a West African State on the business and human rights treaty negotiations;
Supported several developing States in the pandemic treaty negotiations;
Acted as an “advisory centre” for developing State legal advisors at UNHQ in New York for law-making bodies, including Sixth (Legal) Committee and International Law Commission capacity building and technical assistance ;
Supported developing States in the processes leading to the treaty conferences for “Crimes against humanity” and “Protection of persons in the event of disasters”;
Supported several developing States on negotiations over investor-State dispute settlement processes at the United Nations;
Collaborated as convenor and strategic adviser to developing States on a number of International Court of Justice Advisory Opinions, including on climate change and decolonization;
Worked with a Latin American State on negotiations over a global pact for the environment;
Supported several developing States on international law and cyber issues, including with respect to the cybercrime convention negotiations;
Supported developing States on the right to development treaty negotiations;
Supported developing States in the UN tax treaty negotiations;
Acted as negotiation support for several developing States in interconnected issues over access and benefit sharing, including within the BBNJ process, the pandemic treaty and the Convention on Biological Diversity negotiations;
Supported a number of developing States in UN negotiations over lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS);
Supported several developing States in preparations for membership of the UN Security Council.
